Excursion Tip: Klippenstein Castle

Approximately a half hour drive away from Dresden and hidden behind the Dresden Heath lays the town of Radeberg. In Radeberg one can visit the castle of Klippenstein which counts one of the most significant architectural and cultural monuments of the town of Radeberg.

The complex which was founded in the 13th century was expanded from 1543 onwards to a hunting mansion of the Wettiner dynasty by Elector Moritz. After a turbulent history through the centuries, in which it amongst other things, was a headquarters and youth club of the former FDJ organisation. Since 1993 the town Radeberg now takes care of the preservation of the castle.

In the restored historical rooms of the main castle there are various exhibitions on approximately 800 sqm giving information about the history of the castle, and the office and the city of Radeberg. There is a permanent city historical exhibition about the time between the city’s founding and the Biedermeier Art, which is dedicated to urban life and its threats and presents fascinating exhibits dating back several centuries. Part of the exhibition also focuses on the Radeberger officials and literary family Langbein.
